The History of Feline Medical Clinic: A Legacy of Cat-Only Veterinary Care in Vancouver, WA

Since 1977, Feline Medical Clinic has been a place where cats come first, and always have.
Our story began when Dr. Caroline Engle opened our doors with a bold and visionary idea: to create a veterinary clinic focused solely on the unique needs of cats. At the time, the concept was groundbreaking. Not only were we the first feline-exclusive practice in Vancouver, Washington, but we were also among the very first of our kind in the entire United States.
Over the years, we’ve remained deeply committed to Dr. Engle’s original mission: to provide gentle, expert care in a calm, cat-friendly environment. That passion continues today as we carry her legacy forward with the same values, the same heart, and exciting new possibilities for the future.

Setting the Standard: AAHA Accreditation Since 1979
We’ve proudly maintained our AAHA accreditation for over four decades, something fewer than 15% of veterinary practices achieve. That means we voluntarily hold ourselves to over 1,000 rigorous standards in everything from medical protocols and cleanliness, to staff training and client communication. Our most recent evaluation in 2024 once again earned us the highest honor: a three-year accreditation, with the added distinction of being recognized as an AAHA Feline Specialty Clinic.
What does that mean for your cat? It means:
-
Precise medical records that allow for accurate, timely care
-
In-house diagnostics including bloodwork, imaging, and heart monitoring
-
Safe anesthesia and surgical procedures performed in a sterile suite
-
Dental services that help protect long-term health
-
Attentive nursing care by highly trained, compassionate professionals
-
A fully stocked in-house pharmacy for fast, convenient treatment
-
Exceptional cleanliness in every corner of the hospital
-
Ongoing education to keep our team ahead of veterinary advances
-
Urgent care options, either in-clinic or through trusted partners
Cat Friendly Practice Gold Level
In addition to our AAHA accreditation, we’re proud to be a Cat Friendly Practice Gold Level, as designated by the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA).
This title reflects our dedication to creating a low-stress, feline-centered environment, from our gentle handling techniques to the use of Feliway pheromone diffusers, separate waiting areas, and cat-specific medical equipment.
The FVMA recognizes that cats have unique needs and require veterinary care that respects their sensitivities to sound, smell, and surroundings. Our Gold Level status means we’ve met the highest possible standards in feline health, comfort, and communication.
We understand that visiting the vet can be stressful for cats and their humans alike, and we go above and beyond to make each visit as calm, positive, and effective as possible.Want to learn more about what it means to be a Cat Friendly Practice?
