Feline Vaccines for Indoor & Outdoor Cats

Vaccinations are a vital part of your cat’s wellness care plan, even if they live strictly indoors. That’s because viruses and bacteria can be tracked in on shoes, clothing, or other pets, easily spreading to your cat. Vaccines work by preparing your cat’s immune system to fight off potentially serious diseases before exposure ever happens.

Kitten Vaccination Schedule

Kittens receive a series of vaccines to build up lasting immunity during their first few months of life:

  • 8–9 weeks: First FVRCP vaccine (protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia)
  • 12–13 weeks: FVRCP booster + first FeLV (feline leukemia) vaccine for all kittens
  • 16–18 weeks: Final FVRCP booster + second FeLV booster + Rabies vaccine (required by law)

These early vaccines are essential to protect kittens from some of the most contagious and dangerous feline diseases that can cause severe upper respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological illness.

Rabies Vaccination Policy

All dogs, cats, and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies in the state of Washington, and must be revaccinated following veterinary and vaccine manufacturer instructions. To adhere to this Washington State rule, Feline Medical Clinic requires all our patients, including indoor-only cats, to be vaccinated for rabies and boostered appropriately, according to vaccine manufacturer recommendations. In rare cases, a cat’s health status may make them a poor candidate for vaccination, and in this situation, a waiver may be signed. If you have any questions about the rabies vaccination for your cat, please contact us.

Adult Cat Vaccine Boosters

As your cat matures, we’ll work with you to determine an appropriate booster schedule based on:

  • Your cat’s lifestyle (strictly indoor vs. indoor/outdoor)
  • Vaccine type and manufacturer guidelines
  • Local and state laws

Even indoor-only cats benefit from staying current on core vaccines, especially in multi-cat homes or if they spend time in screened porches or come into contact with wildlife.

Microchipping for Cats

No one ever expects their cat to get lost. But even the most cautious pet parents know that accidents happen, whether it’s a door left ajar, a curious leap from an open window, or a frightened dash during a move. Collars and tags can fall off, but a microchip is a permanent form of identification that travels with your cat wherever they go.

Microchipping is quick, minimally invasive, and able to be performed in kittens as young as 2 months. No bigger than a grain of rice, the microchip is inserted under the skin between the shoulderblades, serving as a permanent identification form.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association:

  • Microchipped cats are reunited with their owners 38.5% of the time
  • Non-microchipped cats are only returned 1.8% of the time

That’s over 20 times more likely your cat will find their way home if they’re microchipped. It’s one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your cat’s safety.
