What is Acupuncture for Cats?
Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points in the body to restore balance and encourage healing. It has been used for nearly 4,000 years in both humans and animals, and it’s increasingly recognized by modern veterinary medicine as a powerful, holistic tool.
Acupuncture works through the central nervous system and can:
-
Increase circulation
-
Stimulate the release of endorphins and anti-inflammatory chemicals
-
Relieve muscle spasms and pain
-
Boost the immune system
-
Support hormonal balance and organ function
From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, disease is viewed as an imbalance of energy or “Qi” in the body. Acupuncture restores this balance, helping your cat’s body regulate and heal itself naturally.
Is Acupuncture Safe and Comfortable for Cats?
Feline acupuncture is very safe when performed by a trained veterinary acupuncturist like Dr. Novick. Side effects are rare and typically mild. Your cat may feel sleepy or temporarily sore after treatment, but serious complications are extremely uncommon.
Most cats tolerate acupuncture without a hitch. While they may feel a brief pinch when the needles are inserted, many cats visibly relax during treatment. Sedation is not recommended, as it may interfere with the body’s energetic response to treatment.

The Acupuncture Process: What to Expect
Before your cat begins treatment, Dr. Novick will complete a detailed evaluation based on traditional Chinese medicine. This includes observing your cat’s demeanor, touching specific body points, listening to breathing or vocalizations, and asking detailed questions about your cat’s habits and health history.
From this evaluation, a personalized acupuncture plan is created. Treatment involves placing ultra-thin, sterile needles at key acupuncture points that help redirect energy and promote healing. Each session can last anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes, and the number of sessions your cat needs depends on their individual condition, response to treatment, and overall health.
